Why in News?

HAL secured the ISRO bid to build SSLVs, enabling private manufacturing of small satellite launch vehicles after tech transfer. Aimed at boosting commercial satellite launches, NSIL will oversee 15 SSLV launches, supporting India’s ambition in the global space economy.

Description:

1. Developed by: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
2. Purpose: Designed to launch small satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
3. Payload Capacity: Up to 500 kg to a 500 km planar orbit.
4. Stages:
   1. Three solid propulsion stages
   1. One liquid-fueled Velocity Trimming Module (VTM) for precision injection
5. Length: 34 meters Diameter: 2 meters
6. Lift-off Weight: Approximately 120 tonnes
7. Launch Site: Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota
8. Key Features:

10. SSLV-D1 / EOS-02 Mission (Aug 2022):
    1. First flight of SSLV
    1. Carried EOS-02 and AzaadiSAT
    1. Failed mission: satellites placed in unstable elliptical orbit
    1. Cause: VTM malfunction due to sensor failure
11. Future Use:
    1. Intended to complement PSLV for small payloads
    1. Aimed at commercial satellite launches and private sector partnerships
