Steel slag road technology (Source: PIB)

Context:

In a conference, Union minister of science and technology highlighted Steel slag road technology developed by CSIR.

Steel Slag Road Technology and Sustainable Infrastructure

Explanation:

  • Steel slag road technology uses processed industrial steel waste to completely replace natural aggregates in road construction.
  • Pioneered by institutions like the CSIR-CRRI, this method creates highly durable, eco-friendly highways that can withstand heavy freight traffic while reducing total road thickness by over 30%.

Key Advantages:

  • Superior Durability: Features higher compressive strength, better skid resistance, and improved load-bearing capacity compared to conventional natural stone aggregates.
  • Thinner Pavements: Because the slag aggregate is denser and stiffer, road engineers can build road bases with 30% to 32% less thickness while maintaining the same traffic-load capacity.
  • Cost Effective: This sustainable alternative is reportedly 30% to 42% cheaper to construct than standard bituminous roads, requiring significantly less raw material.
  • Environmental Benefits: By converting millions of tons of dumped industrial slag into usable infrastructure, the technology promotes a circular economy, conserves natural rock quarries, and prevents landfill pollution.
