Strain-Tunable Metals for Programmable Nanophotonic Devices (Source: PIB)

Context:

Researchers from the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru have shown that the optical properties of metals can be changed by applying mechanical strain. This discovery may help build programmable nanophotonic devices, optical sensors and chip-compatible photonic circuits.

Strain-Tunable Metals for Nanophotonic Devices

Explanation:

  • Metals interact with light through their free electrons.
  • In some metals, light can be trapped and concentrated at extremely small scales; this is called plasmon resonance.
  • Earlier, scientists believed that a metal’s optical properties were mostly fixed after choosing its material composition.
  • Simple idea: Metals usually interact with light in a fixed way, but JNCASR scientists showed that if an ultrathin metal film like titanium nitride is slightly stretched or strained, its electrons behave differently. So, the metal can be “tuned” to reflect, absorb or trap light differently.
  • Simple example: Just as tightening a guitar string change its sound, applying strain to a metal changes how it responds to light. This can help make tiny light-based devices for sensors, cancer diagnosis, optical chips and programmable nanophotonic devices.
