Context
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for a ₹472-crore tank overhaul facility at the Vehicle Factory Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. The facility will overhaul T-72 and T-90 tanks, improving their operational availability and strengthening indigenous defence maintenance capacity.
Explanation
- T-72 and T-90 are main battle tanks (MBTs) forming an important part of the Indian Army’s armoured fleet.
- An overhaul involves comprehensive inspection, repair, replacement and refurbishment to restore ageing military equipment to operational standards.
- The new facility will be established at Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ), a unit of Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL).
- AVNL is a Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) under the Ministry of Defence, created following the corporatisation of the former Ordnance Factory Board.
- The Jabalpur facility will have an annual capacity to overhaul about 80 tanks, supplementing the existing capacity at Heavy Vehicles Factory, Avadi.
- It will promote defence indigenisation, reduce dependence on external supply chains and improve operational readiness.
- The project can also strengthen the domestic defence-industrial ecosystem, particularly MSMEs supplying mechanical, electronic and hydraulic components.
