About Rajya Sabha Elections
- Nature: Indirect elections where elected MLAs of State Legislative Assemblies elect members to Rajya Sabha of Parliament.
- Constitutional Basis: Article 80 of the Constitution.
- Conducted by: Election Commission of India (ECI).
- System: Proportional Representation by Single Transferable Vote (PR–STV).
- Voting: Open ballot system (introduced in 2003) — MLAs show vote to party agent.
- Anti-defection Law: Not applicable to Rajya Sabha elections. Hence, political parties cannot issue a binding “Whip”.
