Context
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) plans to extend the UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP) to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a highly tsunami-vulnerable region. Around 30 villages have been identified for the first phase, focusing on preparedness, warning systems and evacuation planning.

- India’s Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) at INCOIS monitors tsunamigenic earthquakes and potential tsunamis in the Indian Ocean.
- The Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP) is a community-based preparedness initiative of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).
- It promotes hazard, inundation and evacuation maps, warning signages, communication systems, evacuation drills and public awareness.
- Odisha already has UNESCO-recognised Tsunami Ready communities.
- Andaman & Nicobar Islands lie close to the Sumatra-Andaman subduction zone, where the Indian Plate interacts with the Burma microplate, creating major earthquake-tsunami risk.
