- WhatsApp Username is an optional unique identifier that allows users to connect without sharing their mobile number, improving privacy.
- Unlike the current system based on mobile number identity, usernames create an additional digital identity linked to an account.
- The feature is already available on platforms such as Telegram and Signal, where users can interact using usernames instead of phone numbers.
- Impersonation occurs when fraudsters create fake identities resembling individuals, companies or government agencies to deceive users.
- Spoofing refers to disguising the identity of a person, device or communication to appear legitimate and gain trust.
- Identity theft, phishing, social engineering, online financial fraud and cyber scams are common cybercrime methods that exploit fake digital identities.
- Messaging platforms generally use safeguards such as unique usernames, verification mechanisms, reporting tools, account suspension, two-factor authentication (2FA) and end-to-end encryption to reduce misuse.
- CERT-In, Information Technology Act, 2000, Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act) and Intermediary Guidelines under the IT Rules, 2021 form India’s key framework for regulating cyber safety and intermediary responsibilities.
