Context
Stanford University researchers transplanted human brain tissue into mice using an experimental approach termed xenocortication.

Explanation
- Xenocortication involves transplanting human cortical tissue into the brain of another species, here laboratory mice. It is needed because studying living human brain tissue directly is nearly impossible
- Researchers used human brain organoids, three-dimensional tissues grown from pluripotent stem cells that mimic aspects of early brain development.
- Part of the mouse cerebral cortex was genetically prevented from developing, creating space for the human graft.
- The transplanted tissue developed cortical neurons, astrocytes and progenitor cells and received blood vessels from the host.
- Human neurons showed electrical activity and formed connections with parts of the mouse nervous system.
- Such models can help study neurodevelopmental disorders, hypoxic brain injury, genetic diseases and potential regenerative therapies.
- Xenocortication differs from a normal human brain because the graft is immature and develops within a non-human neural environment.
- It raises bioethical concerns regarding human–animal neural chimeras and limits on future experiments.
