Context: Odisha has begun India’s first advanced 3D chip packaging plant in Bhubaneswar under the India Semiconductor Mission. The project is expected to strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem, generate jobs, and boost high-tech manufacturing capacity.
- 3D semiconductor chips (often called 3D-ICs or 3D integrated circuits) are advanced microchips that vertically stack multiple semiconductors dies (layers) on top of each other, rather than laying them out flat on a 2D plane.
- These stacked layers are connected using tiny, vertical electrical connections known as Through-Silicon Vias (TSVs) or hybrid bonding, allowing them to function as a single, highly integrated system.
