Context:
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed recognizing E100 (100% ethanol) as an approved fuel under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. This will enable certification and large-scale deployment of vehicles running entirely on ethanol.
- Ethanol is a biofuel produced from sugarcane, maize, and biomass etc.
- India promotes ethanol blending (E10, E20) to reduce crude oil imports. India already achieved E20 (a petrol blend containing 20% ethanol and 80% petrol).
- E100 refers to pure ethanol fuel, requiring specially designed engines.
- Governed under Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) for fuel standards and vehicle approval.
- Homologation = official, mandatory certification process that ensures a vehicle or its components comply with government safety, technical, and environmental regulations before it can be sold or used on public roads.
- Ethanol is renewable & cleaner-burning. Hence Ethanol blended fuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
- E100 implementation aims to achieve energy independence, reduce carbon emissions, and boost farmer incomes.
- key benefits include lowering the massive oil import bill and achieving Net-Zero targets.
- However, challenges include the need for special Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs), lower fuel efficiency, and high-water consumption for feedstock.
