Context:
Mexico City (Capital of Mexico) is sinking at an alarming rate of nearly 20–25 cm per year, as observed by recent satellite data from NISAR satellite. The phenomenon is clearly visible from space, making it one of the fastest-subsiding cities in the world.
- The city is built on the former Lake Texcoco, composed of soft clay that is highly compressible.
- Massive groundwater extraction to meet urban demand has significantly depleted the aquifer.
- Loss of underground water reduces soil support, leading to land subsidence.
- The clay layers undergo irreversible compaction, meaning the land cannot recover.
- Some regions are sinking at 2 cm per month, especially near the airport and central zones.
- Over the past century, parts of the city have sunk by more than 10–12 metres.
- Uneven sinking causes tilting of buildings, cracks in roads, and misalignment of structures.
- Critical infrastructure like subways, drainage systems, and pipelines is severely affected.
- Subsidence worsens the water crisis by damaging water supply networks and increasing leakages.
- Satellite monitoring (InSAR) helps track changes and supports better urban planning and disaster management.
