Cybercrime Surge in India’s NCRB Report

Cybercrime Surge in India’s NCRB Report

Context:

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) Crime in India Report 2024 shows that India’s overall crime rate declined by around 6% compared to the previous year. However, cybercrime cases increased significantly by nearly 17%, highlighting growing digital security challenges and online financial fraud risks.

  • The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs and compiles nationwide crime statistics.
  • NCRB publishes the annual “Crime in India” report based on data submitted by States and Union Territories.
  • Crime rate refers to the number of registered crimes per lakh population, enabling inter-state comparison.
  • Crimes in India are broadly classified under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special and Local Laws (SLL).
  • Cybercrime includes offences committed using computers, digital networks, mobile devices, or the internet.
  • Common cybercrimes include online financial fraud, identity theft, phishing, ransomware, cyberstalking, and sexual exploitation.
  • Rapid digitalisation, online banking, UPI transactions, and social media usage have expanded cyber vulnerabilities.
  • India addresses cyber threats through institutions such as the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), CERT-In, and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
  • NCRB data also tracks crimes against women, Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), economic offences, suicides, and accidental deaths.
  • The report indicated increases in cyber fraud and drug-overdose deaths, reflecting emerging socio-economic and public health concerns alongside traditional law-and-order issues.
