Context:
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) have successfully conducted the maiden trial of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) glide weapon system off the Odisha coast. TARA is India’s first indigenous glide weapon kit designed to convert conventional unguided bombs into precision-guided munitions.
- A glide weapon is a precision-guided, unpowered, stand-off munition equipped with wings or flight control surfaces that allow it to glide toward a target after being released from an aircraft, rather than falling along a standard ballistic trajectory. It allows aircraft to strike ground targets from a safe distance, often over 100 km, outside the range of enemy air defenses.
Key aspects of glide weapons include:
- Stand-off Capability: They are launched far from the target, ensuring pilot safety.
- Precision Targeting: Often equipped with guidance systems (satellite/laser), turning “dumb” bombs into smart, accurate weapons.
- Low Detectability: Due to their small radar signature, lack of engine noise, and low flight altitude, they are very difficult for surface-to-air missiles to intercept.
- Cost-Effectiveness: They can be developed by fitting kits onto existing conventional bombs, making them cheaper than cruise missiles.
- TARA (Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation): India successfully tested this indigenous glide kit on May 7, 2026, to upgrade conventional warheads.
- Gaurav: A 1000 kg Indian indigenous precision-guided glide bomb.
