Following controversies related to NEET-UG, experts have called for structural reforms in the National Testing Agency (NTA), citing concerns regarding paper leaks, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, operational weaknesses, and crisis management. Discussions are ongoing regarding digital examinations, decentralised admissions, and stronger anti-cheating mechanisms.
- The National Testing Agency (NTA) was established in 2017 by the Ministry of Education as an autonomous testing organisation.
- NTA conducts major national-level entrance examinations such as NEET-UG, JEE Main, CUET, UGC-NET, and others.
- NEET (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test) is the nationwide entrance examination for undergraduate medical admissions in India.
- Earlier, medical admissions involved multiple State-level and private entrance examinations before NEET became the common national examination.
- NTA took over NEET conduct from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in 2019.
- Concerns associated with large-scale examinations include paper leaks, impersonation, organised cheating, cybersecurity risks, and logistical vulnerabilities in physical question-paper transportation.
- The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024 criminalises paper leaks, cheating syndicates, impersonation, and organised examination fraud.
- Experts have suggested computer-based testing, encrypted digital systems, hybrid examination models, multiple attempts, decentralised admissions, and stronger cybersecurity frameworks.
- NTA examinations are significant because they determine access to higher education opportunities for millions of students annually.
