Context:
The Endocrine Society has proposed renaming Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). The change aims to better reflect the disorder’s hormonal, metabolic, and reproductive dimensions and improve early diagnosis and treatment.
- PCOS is one of the most common endocrine disorders affecting women of reproductive age and is associated with hormonal imbalance and metabolic dysfunction.
- The condition is diagnosed using criteria such as irregular ovulation (oligo-anovulation), hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovaries detected through ultrasound or Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) levels.
- Symptoms include irregular menstruation, acne, excess hair growth, obesity, infertility, and insulin resistance.
- The term “PCOS” is considered misleading because ovarian cysts are not always present and the disorder involves multiple endocrine and metabolic disturbances.
- Associated comorbidities include type-2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, endometrial cancer, and psychological stress.
- The proposed PMOS terminology highlights endocrine, metabolic, and ovarian dysfunction together, aiming to reduce stigma and improve clinical understanding.
