Context:
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the SARTHAK Public Distribution System (PDS) scheme for five years with an outlay of ₹25,530 crore. The scheme aims to strengthen food security by using advanced technologies in beneficiary selection, foodgrain movement, citizen feedback and transport optimisation.
- Public Distribution System (PDS) is India’s food security mechanism through which subsidised foodgrains are distributed to eligible households.
- It functions mainly under the National Food Security Act, 2013, which provides legal entitlement to subsidised foodgrains.
- PDS involves procurement, storage, transportation, allocation and distribution of foodgrains through Fair Price Shops.
- Key institutions include the Food Corporation of India (FCI), State governments, ration shops and beneficiary databases.
- Technology reforms in PDS include Aadhaar seeding, e-POS machines, digitised ration cards, supply-chain tracking and One Nation One Ration Card.
- The SARTHAK PDS scheme aims to improve targeting, reduce leakages, optimise foodgrain movement and strengthen grievance redressal.
