Bulk Waste Generators (Source: Down to Earth)

Context:

Bulk waste generators (BWGs) are frequently in the news because municipalities across India are cracking down on them for failing to segregate and process their waste at the source, contributing heavily to city landfill overflow.

Explanation:

  • Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) are entities that generate large quantities of solid waste, generally 100 kg or more per day, such as hotels, restaurants, markets, gated communities, institutions, malls and large offices.
  • Under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, BWGs are expected to segregate waste at source into wet waste, dry waste and domestic hazardous waste, and process biodegradable waste through composting or biomethanation as far as possible.
  • They are important for urban waste management because failure to handle bulk waste at source increases pressure on municipal bodies, landfills and waste transport systems; effective BWG compliance supports circular economy, decentralised waste management and Swachh Bharat Mission.
