Role of Leucine in Mitochondrial Energy Production (Source: The Hindu)

Context:

Recent research highlights that leucine, an essential amino acid, helps protect mitochondria and supports cellular energy production. It may prevent premature degradation of mitochondrial outer membrane proteins, thereby helping cells maintain energy balance.

Leucine Mitochondrial Function: Advancing Cellular Energy

Explanation:

  • Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, which perform vital functions in cells and organs.
  • Leucine is an essential amino acid, meaning the human body cannot produce it and must obtain it from food.
  • It belongs to Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs), along with isoleucine and valine.
  • Mitochondria are called the powerhouse of the cell because they produce ATP, the cell’s energy currency.
  • Organs with high energy demand, such as the heart, muscles, brain and nervous system, depend heavily on mitochondria.
  • Leucine helps maintain the outer mitochondrial membrane and protects mitochondrial proteins from premature degradation.
  • A study using Caenorhabditis elegans showed leucine interacts with SEL1L protein, linked to removal of damaged proteins.
  • This may help in understanding metabolic disorders, ageing and age-related diseases.
