Raindrop Evaporation during the Indian Monsoon (Source: The Hindu)

Context

A study by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune has found that nearly 25% of monsoon rainfall evaporates before reaching the ground over parts of India. The findings will improve weather forecasting, monsoon prediction, and climate models by better representing rainfall processes.

Raindrop Evaporation during the Indian Monsoon

Explanation:

  • Raindrop evaporation is the process by which falling raindrops evaporate before reaching the Earth’s surface, especially in dry and warm sub-cloud layers.
  • During the Southwest Monsoon (June–September), evaporation rates vary with temperature, humidity, wind, and raindrop size.
  • Evaporation causes evaporative cooling, creating cold pools and downdrafts, which influence cloud formation, convection, and rainfall intensity.
  • The study used stable water isotopes (heavy oxygen and hydrogen isotopes) to estimate rain mass lost through evaporation.
  • Accurate estimation of raindrop evaporation helps improve Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP), climate models, monsoon dynamics, hydrological cycle studies, and water resource planning.
  • The findings are significant for enhancing disaster preparedness, agricultural advisories, and understanding the impacts of climate change on India’s rainfall patterns.
