Context
The Union Government has launched Mission Golden Spice, a ₹175.45-crore mission to strengthen the value chain of GI-tagged Lakadong Turmeric in Meghalaya.
Explanation
- Lakadong Turmeric is a Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged (2024) turmeric grown mainly in the West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, renowned for its exceptionally high curcumin content (7–10%), compared to the global average of about 2–3%.
- Curcumin is the principal bioactive compound responsible for turmeric’s anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and nutraceutical properties.
- The five-year project (2025–2030) aims to enhance cultivation, processing, branding and exports, positioning Lakadong turmeric as a premium global spice.
- Mission Golden Spice is a ₹175.45-crore, convergence-based initiative led by MDoNER and the North Eastern Council (NEC), with support from APEDA, Spices Board, National Turmeric Board, ICAR, NABARD and SFAC.
- The mission focuses on value-chain development, GI monetisation, processing, branding, exports, farmer-producer organisations and integrated curcumin extraction facilities.
- The initiative aligns with the vision of Atmanirbhar North East and promotes “Brand North East” through value addition and sustainable agricultural exports.
