Context
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has launched the Nifty500 Ahimsa Index, India’s first stock market index based on animal-cruelty-free investing.

Explanation
- A thematic index tracks companies based on a specific investment theme rather than the overall market.
- The Nifty500 Ahimsa Index includes companies from the Nifty 500 that satisfy the Ahimsa Investment Movement (AIM) framework, developed with the Ahimsagain Foundation.
- The AIM framework classifies companies into Green, Orange and Red bands; only Green category companies are included.
- The index excludes businesses involved in animal cruelty, including meat, poultry, leather, dairy, animal testing, and related sectors.
- It may serve as a benchmark for Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), Index Funds, and other passive investment products, reflecting the growing trend of ESG and ethical investing.
- Recently, BSE also launched the Saatvik 100 Index, promoting companies aligned with broader Saatvik principles.
