Context
The ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Busan, South Korea. With this inscription, Sarnath becomes India’s 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Explanation:
- Sarnath, located near Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), is one of the four principal Buddhist pilgrimage sites associated with the life of Gautama Buddha.
- It is the place where Lord Buddha delivered his First Sermon (Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta) after attaining enlightenment, marking the beginning of the Buddhist Sangha.
- The site contains important monuments such as the Dhamek Stupa, Chaukhandi Stupa, Ashokan Pillar (whose Lion Capital is the National Emblem of India), monasteries and ancient temples.
- UNESCO World Heritage Sites are places of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) recognized under the 1972 World Heritage Convention and are inscribed by the World Heritage Committee.
