Context
The Delhi Government has approved a project to install 250 Water ATMs across the National Capital at an estimated cost of ₹58 crore. The initiative will begin with government schools and aims to improve access to safe drinking water.

Explanation
- A Water ATM is an automated dispensing system that provides safe, purified drinking water through technologies such as Reverse Osmosis (RO), Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, Ultrafiltration (UF), or ozonation, depending on source-water quality.
- Water ATMs are commonly installed at schools, hospitals, railway stations, bus terminals, and public places to ensure affordable and reliable access to potable water.
- They support public health by reducing water-borne diseases and improving drinking water quality.
- The initiative complements Jal Jeevan Mission (Urban) and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation, which aim to ensure universal access to safe and affordable drinking water.
- Regular water quality testing, maintenance, and source sustainability are essential for their long-term effectiveness.
