Context
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology recently approved 31 additional proposals under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS). In all, 106 approved projects envisage ₹69,548 crore of investment and about 74,628 direct jobs.

Explanation
- An electronic product is built from raw materials, components, sub-assemblies and final assemblies, for example, a camera module fitted into a finished smartphone.
- India has expanded electronics assembly, especially mobile phones, but still depends heavily on imported components and manufacturing equipment.
- Domestic value addition means a larger share of a product’s value is created within India rather than through imported inputs.
- ECMS, notified in April 2025, is administered by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
- It supports four segments: sub-assemblies, bare components, supply-chain materials and capital goods for electronics manufacturing.
- Incentives are linked to additional turnover, capital expenditure or a combination, depending on the product category.
- Covered products include camera and display modules, printed circuit boards, connectors, capacitors, relays, optical transceivers and rare-earth magnets.
- Deeper component manufacturing reduces import dependence, strengthens supply-chain resilience and boosts exports, complementing the semiconductor mission and production-linked incentive schemes.
