Context
Recently, the Supreme Court-constituted Central Empowered Committee (CEC) criticised the Assam government over inadequate action against mining near the southern boundary of Kaziranga National Park, particularly around the Parkup Pahar Range, an important wildlife corridor.
Explanation
- Kaziranga National Park (KNP) is located in Assam, mainly across the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- It is globally known for the Indian one-horned rhinoceros and also supports tigers, elephants and wild water buffaloes.
- During Brahmaputra floods, animals move from Kaziranga towards the higher Karbi Anglong Hills through designated wildlife corridors.
- The Parkup Pahar Range along Kaziranga’s southern boundary forms part of this ecologically important landscape.
- Mining, quarrying and construction can fragment these corridors and disturb natural watersheds and drainage systems.
- The Supreme Court had earlier restricted mining and related activities along Kaziranga’s southern boundary and the catchments of streams originating in Karbi Anglong.
- The CEC assists the Supreme Court in monitoring compliance with forest and wildlife conservation orders.
