Context
The United States, Denmark and Greenland have signed an agreement permitting an expanded U.S. military presence in Greenland while reaffirming the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark. It expands the existing defence framework rather than transferring Greenland to the U.S.
Explanation
- Greenland is the world’s largest island and a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, strategically located between the Arctic and North America. Its location is important for Arctic security, missile warning, trans-Atlantic defence and emerging Arctic routes.
- Greenland is covered by NATO through the Kingdom of Denmark.
- The 1951 U.S.–Denmark Defence Agreement provides the legal foundation for American military presence in Greenland.
- The U.S. already operates Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base), important for missile warning and space surveillance. The 2026 agreement permits expansion at Pituffik and additional defence areas at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig.
- The framework blocks non-NATO nations from establishing military installations while ensuring local Greenlandic sources get priority for defense contracts.
