Context
India’s vast canal network is being examined for wider deployment of canal-top photovoltaic (CTPV) systems. CTPV involves installing solar photovoltaic panels on elevated structures above canals or along canal banks.

Explanation
- Major advantages are negligible additional land requirement, reduced canal-water evaporation and possible improvement in panel efficiency due to the cooling effect of water.
- India’s first canal-top solar project was commissioned in Gujarat in 2012.
- In 2014, MNRE introduced a pilot scheme for grid-connected canal-top and canal-bank solar PV projects.
- CTPV can complement floating solar photovoltaic (FSPV) systems, which use reservoirs and other water bodies.
- Challenges include higher structural costs, maintenance access, canal geometry and grid connectivity.
