World Rhino Day is observed annually on September 22 to promote conservation of the world’s five surviving rhino species. India has highlighted the recovery of the Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros and initiated Project Rhino to strengthen protection, habitat management and population expansion.
Explanation
- Greater One-Horned Rhino (Rhinoceros unicornis) is the largest Asian rhino; it inhabits Terai, floodplain grasslands, swamps and riverine forests. Its historical range covered the Indus–Ganga–Brahmaputra basins.
- India supports 4,014 rhinos; numbers rose from about 1,500 in the 1980s to over 4,000, a ~170% increase.
- Assam holds nearly 80% of the global population of One-Horned Rhinos; Kaziranga is the principal stronghold.
- Important Indian habitats include Kaziranga, Orang, Pobitora, Manas, Jaldapara and Dudhwa.
- Project Rhino (2026) supports range States through financial and technical assistance for protection, habitat management and genetic improvement.
