Context
A recent study finds that Indian women live longer than men after age 60 but experience fewer years of healthy, financially secure and satisfactory life. Women can expect about 5.7 Years of Good Life (YoGL) after 60, compared with 8.2 years for men.

Explanation
- Years of Good Life (YoGL) is a multidimensional measure of well-being that goes beyond conventional life expectancy.
- A year qualifies as a “good” year only when four conditions are simultaneously met: freedom from poverty, adequate physical functioning, cognitive health and life satisfaction.
- The study used data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) and mortality data from the Sample Registration System (SRS).
- Women at age 60 have higher remaining life expectancy than men, but fewer YoGL, indicating a longevity–quality of life gap.
- The disadvantage is particularly marked among rural women, reflecting gender and spatial inequalities.
- Among women, cognitive health contributed strongly to interstate differences; among men, functional health was more important.
- YoGL can complement life expectancy in assessing healthy and inclusive ageing.
