Context
The President has given assent to the Gujarat UCC (Uniform Civil Code) Bill, 2026, paving the way for its implementation after the State government notifies the commencement. The Code seeks common rules on marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships.

Explanation
- Uniform Civil Code (UCC) means a common set of civil laws governing personal matters irrespective of religion.
- Article 44, a Directive Principle of State Policy, asks the State to endeavour to secure a UCC throughout India.
- Marriage, divorce, adoption and succession fall in the Concurrent List, allowing both Parliament and State Legislatures to legislate.
- Gujarat’s Code covers marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships.
- It is largely modelled on Uttarakhand’s UCC.
- It does not apply to Scheduled Tribes and certain persons/groups whose customary rights are constitutionally protected.
- A State Bill reserved for the President may receive assent under Article 201.
- Presidential assent does not itself determine commencement where the law requires a subsequent State Gazette notification.
