Context
Government-allied forces have entered Mekelle, capital of Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, after the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) withdrew following renewed fighting.

Explanation
- Tigray is Ethiopia’s northernmost regional state and borders Eritrea and Sudan.
- The TPLF was historically a dominant political force in Ethiopia and later became the principal Tigrayan armed-political organisation.
- Conflict between Ethiopia’s federal government and Tigrayan forces began in 2020, causing large-scale displacement and humanitarian distress.
- The Pretoria Agreement, 2022, formally ended major hostilities between the Ethiopian government and TPLF.
- Renewed fighting threatens the fragile post-war settlement and wider stability in the Horn of Africa.
- Ethiopia is a landlocked country; its capital is Addis Ababa.
- The Horn of Africa broadly includes Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalia.
