Government Opposes Monopolies in Satellite Internet Services (Source: The Hindu)

Context

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that India does not permit monopolies in any sector, responding to Elon Musk’s allegations that established telecom operators were obstructing Starlink’s entry. The government clarified that satellite internet providers would be allowed to operate after fulfilling security requirements and finalisation of revenue charges.

Satellite Internet Regulation: India's Competition Policy

Explanation

  • Satellite Internet is a wireless broadband service that provides internet connectivity through communication satellites, reducing dependence on terrestrial fibre-optic cables and mobile towers.
  • It works through a user terminal (dish antenna) that sends and receives signals from satellites, which relay data through ground stations connected to the internet or through other satellites.
  • Starlink, developed by SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, is a satellite internet service designed to provide high-speed broadband connectivity worldwide, particularly in remote areas.
  • Starlink operates a constellation of thousands of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), typically at an altitude of around 550 km, enabling lower latency than traditional geostationary satellite systems.
  • Starlink Satellite Communications (SpaceX), OneWeb India Communications (Eutelsat OneWeb / backed by Bharti Airtel) and Jio Satellite Communications (Reliance Industries) are the three applicants before Department of Telecommunication.
