Introduction:
India has the world’s largest cotton acreage, yet its cotton productivity remains lower than major producers such as China, Brazil and Australia. This shows that merely expanding area under cotton cannot ensure higher output unless supported by technology, scientific farming and institutional investment.
Body:
Why acreage expansion is insufficient?
- India already has a very large area under cotton cultivation, but productivity per hectare remains modest.
- Expansion into rainfed, low-input and marginal lands may increase vulnerability to drought, pest attacks and income instability.
- Price controls and procurement distortions can reduce incentives for farmers and private players to invest in productivity-enhancing innovation.
Role of technology investment:
- Seed technology: better hybrids, climate-resilient varieties and next-generation biotechnology are needed, especially as pink bollworm has evolved resistance against earlier Bt cotton benefits.
- Pest management: Integrated pest management, pheromone traps, biological control and digital pest surveillance can reduce crop losses.
- Water efficiency: Drip irrigation, micro-irrigation and moisture-conservation techniques are crucial because much of India’s cotton is rainfed.
- Mechanization: Mechanized sowing, picking and precision farming can reduce labour costs and improve quality.
- Research and extension: Stronger public research, farmer training and data-based advisories can bridge the gap between laboratory innovation and field application.
Way Forward:
India’s recently introduced Cotton Mission should focus not only on increasing production, but also on productivity, quality, sustainability and farmer income. Public-private partnership, stable policy signals and investment in R&D are essential.
Conclusion:
India’s cotton challenge is not primarily a land shortage problem, but a productivity problem. Therefore, future gains must come from technology, scientific farming and better institutions rather than simple acreage expansion.
