Success stories of people achieving success from humble origins to national heights are always heartwarming. They are not only the rays of hope for the dreamers but also show us that no number of challenges can influence our will, commitment, and will power. One such inspiring story is that of Challa Pavan Kalyan, who got All India Rank 164 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2024,which is considered one of India’s most competitive exams.

Pavan Kalyan’s transformation from humble farming community roots in Andhra Pradesh to the elite UPSC merit list is a testament to dedicated work ethic, relentless perseverance, and faith in his own capabilities. This blog is an in-depth analysis of his background, educational history, extracurricular activities, and the dogged struggle that took him to this triumph.

Early Life and Background:

Born and raised in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh,  Pavan Kalyan comes from a simplicity and hard work-oriented family. While his father, Challa Ramesh, is an entrepreneur turned farmer, his mother is a Homemaker. His parents were not affluent by any standard, but they laid huge importance on value-based education as well as discipline, giving their kid a platform to dream beyond that is achievable within the known realm.

It was this rural environment that gave him the traits of resilience, humility, and perseverance — traits which would later greatly benefit him while pursuing his UPSC.

Educational Journey and Academic Pursuits:

The scholarship of Pavan is nothing but superb. He studied at Sri Venkateswara Bala Kuteer, Guntur, obtaining an ‘A’ grade and a perfect 10 CGPA in his 10th standard under the CBSE. Even in his course of study through intermediate, where he obtained a superb 98.7% in his 12th standard (2016).

Not one to restrict himself to studies only, Pavan kept himself actively engaged in extracurricular as well as academic activities at all times, demonstrating the makings of a well-balanced personality. He then pursued a B.Tech in Instrumentation and Control Engineering from the very well-known National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappalli, graduating in 2020 with a First Class and a CGPA of 7.48 out of 10.

The highly competitive study atmosphere with the full-fledged campus life of NIT Trichy had a great impact on developing Pavan’s leadership quality, team working skill, and problem-solving ability – all essential qualities of any government servant.

A Versatile All-Rounder:

Along with academic excellence, Pavan was also very much engaged in extracurricular activities during his college life. His belief was that he has to lead a balanced life where he would not only have the pressure of studies but, most importantly, would become a better personality as well.

Science and Quiz Competitions: He received the 1st Prize in District-Level Science Quiz Competition held by Jana Vignana Vedika, which testifies his keen interest in general knowledge as well as analytical thinking.

Sports Leadership: An ardent badminton player, Pavan led the NIT Trichy badminton team that acquired gold and two bronze medals in the All India Inter-NIT Tournaments. Besides that, he also actively engaged in long-distance running and played a significant role in the National Sports Organization (NSO) during his days at college.

His best friend narrated that Pavan never misses calculating Run rate, Statistics while viewing cricket. Math is enjoyable for him.

Leadership Roles Types: Leadership traits were seen in various types of roles since childhood. He was the Founder and Head Boy of his school Cadet Corps and subsequently the Head Coordinator of NIT Trichy’s Annual Sports Fest. These leadership roles not only improved his organizational abilities but also instilled a sense of responsibility and discipline in him.

Hobbies and Interests: Pavan’s hobbies ranged from playing chess, geo-guessing puzzles, and motivating other students to engage in sports. These pastimes, although apparently leisure activities, honed his strategic mind, patience, and observing abilities — skills that are vital to the intensive UPSC preparation process.

The UPSC Journey: Trials, Failures, and Triumph

Pavan had always wanted to become a member of the Indian Civil Services since he wished to do something positive towards the development of the country, particularly in backward and rural regions. Realizing his dream was not easy, though.

He had taken the Indian Forest Service (IFS) Preliminary Examinations in 2022 and 2023 and had cleared both attempts but had narrowly missed further progress. Never disheartened by these early setbacks, Pavan was never one to lose hope, and he kept on using every failed attempt as an opportunity to learn and improve his strategy.

What changed in his preparation?

Pavan came to La Excellence after his poor scores in UPSC interview. In his 3rd attempt he became a member of our ‘Enhance Core Group’,where he was guided by subject matter experts and counseled him in answer writing practice. He utilized his peer group at our Enhance team. His fellow peers are Sai Chaitanya Jadhav (AIR-68), Banna Venkatesh (AIR-15), Sai vinod (AIR-577) and Aryaman yadav (AIR-695).

See the names. This is what we created. A solid support system to guide serious aspirants. After the mains result, he enrolled in our Interview Guidance Programme, wherein our top most faculty members such as Dr.Rambabu sir, Venkat Mohan sir and other serving civil servants have mentored him. The result is he secured 801 marks in Mains and 173 marks in the interview. In previous attempt he only secured 120 in interview. That change in his marks is our mark.

His perseverance paid off in 2024, when he passed the Civil Services Examination on his third try, getting an All India Rank of 146. Not only is this the realization of his dream, which had been a long one, but also a testament to the fact that determination, planned preparation, and emotional intelligence can reverse things in one’s favor.
