Context
Civil rights groups in Rajasthan have sought more inclusive public consultations by the Supreme Court-appointed committee on the Aravalli hills. The committee is reviewing the Centre’s report on the definition and delineation of the Aravalli range and assessing its ecological and socio-economic implications.

Explanation
- Aravalli Range, among the world’s oldest fold mountain systems, extends roughly from Gujarat through Rajasthan and Haryana to Delhi.
- Its highest peak is Guru Shikhar (1,722 m) on Mount Abu, Rajasthan.
- Aravallis act as an ecological barrier limiting the eastward expansion of the Thar Desert and help reduce desertification and dust movement.
- The range forms an important watershed; rivers associated with it include Banas, Luni, Sabarmati and Sahibi.
- It supports groundwater recharge, biodiversity, forests and wildlife corridors, particularly across the semi-arid landscape.
- Major threats include illegal mining, quarrying, deforestation, urbanisation and habitat fragmentation.
