Recently, at the National Conference on Coastal Ecology, Security and Sustainability (CCESS) 2026, the government emphasised treating India’s coastline as an integrated space linking ecology, security, technology, economic development and coastal communities.

- India’s 11,000–12,000 km coastline supports ports, fisheries, marine biodiversity, coastal livelihoods and strategic security.
- The Blue Economy refers to sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, livelihoods and ecosystem health.
- The Deep Ocean Mission, implemented by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, seeks exploration of deep-sea resources and development of indigenous ocean technologies.
- Submersibles, underwater robots, ocean observation, remote sensing, communication and surveillance systems can support resource exploration and coastal security.
- Marine resources include fisheries, minerals, metals and other biological resources, but their exploitation requires ecological safeguards.
- Mangroves, coral reefs and coastal wetlands provide biodiversity, carbon storage and natural protection against coastal hazards.
- A holistic approach integrates coastal communities, traditional knowledge, ports, scientific research, environmental sustainability and maritime security.
- Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar promotes coastal cleanliness through citizen participation.
