Context:
India is on track to achieve its target of 3% blending of Compressed Biogas (CBG) with CNG and domestic PNG by FY27. The current blending level has already reached nearly 2%, supported by the expansion of CBG production plants under the government’s bioenergy initiatives.
Explanation:
- Compressed Biogas (CBG) is a purified form of biogas produced from agricultural residue, cattle dung, municipal solid waste, sewage waste and organic biomass through anaerobic digestion.
- After purification and compression, CBG has properties similar to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and can be used as a transport fuel or for domestic and industrial purposes.
- The SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) initiative, launched in 2018, promotes CBG production and marketing across India.
- CBG contributes to the circular economy by converting waste into energy while reducing methane emissions, stubble burning and landfill pollution.
- The GOBARdhan Scheme supports waste-to-wealth projects and facilitates establishment of CBG plants.
- CBG blending with PNG (Piped Natural Gas) and CNG helps reduce dependence on imported natural gas, improves energy security, and supports India’s climate commitments.
- It also aids the transition towards a gas-based economy, increases farmers’ income through biomass utilization, and promotes renewable energy and sustainable transportation.
