- The launch took place during a national workshop on the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
- Green hydrogen is clean burning hydrogen gas produced by splitting water using renewable electricity like solar or wind power.
- Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme, The Standard:
- Defines green hydrogen from plants producing hydrogen as having emissions below 2 kg CO₂ equivalent per kg of H₂.
The Process:
- Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) agencies verify plant data to issue tradeable carbon credits.
- National Green Hydrogen Mission & Applications:
- The Mission India’s ₹19,744 crore mission aims to produce 5 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT) of green hydrogen annually by 2030.
- It drives this transition through the SIGHT (Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition) program, which funds local electrolyser manufacturing and clean fuel production.
- The goal is to slash fossil fuel imports and cut 50 million tonnes of annual CO₂ emissions.
Key Applications:
- Industrial Feedstock: Replaces fossil-fuel-based “grey” hydrogen in oil refineries and ammonia-based fertilizer plants.
- Green Steel: Substitutes coal and natural gas in the steelmaking process to create low-carbon metal.
- Heavy Transport: Powers long-haul trucks, buses, and trains using hydrogen fuel cells for zero-emission transit.
- Energy Storage: Stores excess solar and wind power as hydrogen gas to generate electricity when the grid peaks.
- Shipping & Aviation: Converts into green methanol or sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for clean long-distance travel.
