India’s Container Shipping Vulnerability and Domestic Container Manufacturing (Source: The Hindu)

Context

Recent global shipping disruptions, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea, have exposed India’s dependence on foreign-owned containers and shipping lines. In response, the Government has launched initiatives to boost domestic container manufacturing and strengthen India’s maritime logistics resilience.

Container Manufacturing Scheme: Strengthening India’s Maritime Resilience

Explanation:

  • A shipping container Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) is a standardized cargo unit enabling intermodal transport by ships, rail, and trucks.
  • India relies heavily on foreign shipping lines, which carry nearly 90 to95% of India’s EXIM (Export-Import) cargo, making supply chains vulnerable to global disruptions.
  • Geopolitical chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz, Bab el-Mandeb, and the Suez Canal significantly affect freight costs, transit time, and container availability.
  • The Union Budget 2026–27 announced a ₹10,000 crore Container Manufacturing Scheme to enhance domestic production and reduce import dependence.
  • India is also promoting an indigenous container shipping ecosystem through the proposed Bharat Container Shipping Line, alongside port-led logistics under the PM Gati Shakti and Sagarmala Programme.
  • Strengthening maritime logistics is essential for trade competitiveness, supply chain resilience, export growth, and economic security.
