Context
Scientists have, for the first time, directly observed an active seafloor rifting event in the Indian Ocean using underwater sensors. The event recorded magma movement, seafloor spreading, and a large underwater volcanic eruption, providing new insights into plate tectonics and the formation of oceanic crust.

Explanation:
- Rifting is the process in which the Earth’s lithospheric plates diverge, allowing magma from the mantle to rise and create new oceanic crust.
- It commonly occurs along Divergent Plate Boundaries, especially at Mid-Ocean Ridges, leading to seafloor spreading.
- As tectonic plates separate, magma solidifies into basaltic rock, continuously expanding the ocean floor.
- The Indian Ocean hosts active spreading centres such as the Central Indian Ridge, Carlsberg Ridge, and Southwest Indian Ridge.
- Rifting is associated with submarine volcanism, hydrothermal vents, earthquakes, and the Wilson Cycle of ocean basin evolution.
- Direct observation of seafloor rifting improves understanding of plate tectonics, earthquake and volcanic processes, marine geology, and the evolution of Earth’s crust.
