China’s Ban on Helium Exports and Its Strategic Significance (Source: The Hindu)

Context:

China has temporarily banned helium exports amid tightening global supply conditions and rising geopolitical tensions. The move is expected to worsen global helium shortages, affecting critical sectors such as semiconductors, healthcare, aerospace, and quantum technologies.

Critical Mineral Helium

Explanation:

  • Helium (He) is a noble gas (Group 18) with the lowest boiling point (-269°C), making it indispensable as a cryogenic coolant.
  • It is a non-renewable natural resource, produced through the radioactive decay of uranium and thorium in the Earth’s crust and extracted mainly from natural gas fields.
  • Major producers include the United States, Qatar, Russia, Algeria, and Canada, while China produces only a small share but is a major consumer.
  • Helium is a critical mineral due to its irreplaceable role in MRI scanners, semiconductor wafer fabrication, aerospace, quantum computing, leak detection, fibre-optic manufacturing, and scientific research.
  • Storage and transport are expensive because helium liquefies only at ultra-low temperatures, requiring vacuum-insulated cryogenic containers with minimal leakage.
  • Supply disruptions expose the vulnerability of global critical supply chains, highlighting the importance of strategic reserves, resource security, and supply-chain diversification.
