Context:
A recent study of Delhi’s air quality from January to June 2026 found that pollution levels remained above World Health Organization guidelines on more than 99% of the monitored days. Areas with intensive construction activity, transport corridors and commercial movement recorded the highest particulate-matter concentrations.

Explanation:
- Air pollution refers to the presence of harmful particles and gases in the atmosphere beyond safe limits.
- PM2.5 consists of fine particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or less; these can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream.
- PM10 includes larger inhalable particles generally produced by road dust, construction, industries and vehicle movement.
- Delhi’s major sources include vehicular emissions, construction dust, road dust, industrial activity, waste burning and seasonal biomass burning.
- Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) is mainly released through fossil-fuel combustion, especially from vehicles and industries.
- Ground-level ozone is a secondary pollutant formed when nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds react in sunlight.
- The National Ambient Air Quality Standards prescribe permissible pollutant levels in India.
- The WHO Air Quality Guidelines are stricter health-based benchmarks.
- Pollution hotspots or “red zones” require localised monitoring, dust control, cleaner transport and strict enforcement.
