A group of Nihang Sikhs recently ended a three-day standoff at a gurdwara in Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand. The incident has brought attention to the identity, beliefs, attire and martial traditions of the Nihang community.

- Nihang Sikhs are a traditional armed order within Sikhism, historically associated with the Khalsa and the defence of the Sikh faith.
- The term Nihang is commonly understood to signify a fearless, detached and courageous warrior.

- Some Nihang groups maintain mobile camps called chhaunis and participate prominently in Hola Mohalla celebrations.
- Gatka is a traditional Sikh martial art involving coordinated movements with sticks, swords and other weapons.
- Gatka combines physical training, self-defence, discipline, agility and ceremonial martial display.
