Nihang Sikhs: Beliefs, Distinctive Tradition and Gatka (Source: Indian Express)

Context:

A group of Nihang Sikhs recently ended a three-day standoff at a gurdwara in Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand. The incident has brought attention to the identity, beliefs, attire and martial traditions of the Nihang community.

Nihang Sikhs and the Legacy of Khalsa Martial Tradition

Explanation:

  • Nihang Sikhs are a traditional armed order within Sikhism, historically associated with the Khalsa and the defence of the Sikh faith.
  • The term Nihang is commonly understood to signify a fearless, detached and courageous warrior.
  • Their traditions are closely linked to Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, and the establishment of the Khalsa in 1699.
  • Nihangs follow the Sikh Rehat Maryada, maintain the Five Ks and emphasise bravery, discipline, equality, service and protection of the oppressed.
  • They are recognised by their blue robes, high turbans or dumallas, steel bracelets and traditional weapons such as swords, spears and chakrams.
  • Some Nihang groups maintain mobile camps called chhaunis and participate prominently in Hola Mohalla celebrations.
  • Gatka is a traditional Sikh martial art involving coordinated movements with sticks, swords and other weapons.
  • Gatka combines physical training, self-defence, discipline, agility and ceremonial martial display.
