Context:
As India’s population ages rapidly, age-related non-communicable diseases, particularly dementia, are emerging as a serious public health concern. A recent study by the Hyderabad-based ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition establishes a strong link between micronutrient deficiency and dementia risk among Indian adults. The findings position nutrition as a key modifiable factor in maintaining long-term cognitive health.
Explanation:
- Dementia is a progressive neurological condition causing decline in memory, thinking and cognitive function. Nearly half of all cases are driven by modifiable factors such as hypertension, diabetes, physical inactivity, depression and social isolation, making dietary and lifestyle interventions clinically relevant.
- The ICMR-NIN study examined 570 adults aged 40-80 years from rural and urban Telangana, assessing dementia risk through the CAIDE score, cognitive performance through the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, and micronutrient levels through blood analysis.
- Nearly 40% of participants showed higher predicted dementia risk, consistently linked to deficiencies in Vitamin D and B-complex vitamins (B2, B6, B12), lower dietary diversity and higher saturated fat consumption.
- A clear rural-urban divide was observed, with rural participants showing greater vitamin deficiencies due to limited access to nutrient-rich foods, underscoring the need for targeted nutritional interventions as India’s dementia burden is projected to rise sharply by 2050.
