Context
ISRO has successfully launched the EOS-05 Earth-observation satellite aboard GSLV-F17 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. EOS-05 will provide near-real-time Earth imagery from geosynchronous orbit, supporting agriculture, environmental monitoring, disaster management and strategic applications.
Explanation
- EOS stands for Earth Observation Satellite, used to remotely observe and collect information about the Earth’s surface and atmosphere.
- EOS-05 is India’s first dedicated imaging satellite designed to operate from geosynchronous orbit, about 36,000 km above Earth.
- A geosynchronous satellite has an orbital period equal to Earth’s rotation period; therefore, it returns to the same position in the sky at the same time each day.
- A geostationary orbit is a special geosynchronous orbit that is circular, equatorial and west-to-east, making the satellite appear stationary over one point on Earth.
- EOS-05 has multi-band imaging capabilities, enabling frequent observation for agriculture, environmental monitoring and disaster management.
- It weighs 2,367 kg, has an expected nine-year operational life, and was launched by the three-stage GSLV, whose upper stage uses cryogenic propulsion.
