China’s ethane imports reached 3.462 million tons in 2026, with the United States emerging as the sole supplier. Increased imports were driven by strong petrochemical demand and disruptions in West Asian feedstock supplies due to regional geopolitical tensions.

  • Ethane (Câ‚‚H₆) is a colourless, odourless hydrocarbon belonging to the alkane family and is a major component of natural gas.
  • Ethane is primarily obtained during natural gas processing and petroleum refining.
  • It is a fossil-fuel-based hydrocarbon and is highly flammable.
  • The most important application of ethane is as a petrochemical feedstock for producing ethylene through steam cracking.
  • Ethylene is a basic petrochemical used in manufacturing polyethylene plastics, PVC products, synthetic fibres, packaging materials, detergents, solvents, and industrial chemicals.
  • Ethane-based ethylene production is generally cheaper and more energy-efficient than naphtha-based production.
  • Ethane is also used as a refrigerant in cryogenic systems because of its low boiling point.
