Context
Recently, India and Belgium strengthened bilateral defence cooperation by signing three government-level defence agreements. The two countries also agreed to deepen cooperation in trade, maritime security, counter-terrorism, cybercrime and defence manufacturing.
Explanation
- India–Belgium relations cover trade, investment, technology, defence and security; Belgium is also a member of the European Union (EU) and NATO.
- Belgium’s strategic location in Western Europe and the presence of major EU and NATO institutions in Brussels enhance its geopolitical importance.
- The new agreements include a Letter of Intent on Defence Cooperation and cooperation between the two countries’ defence industries, encouraging joint production and industrial partnerships.
- India will appoint a Defence Attaché at its Embassy in Brussels, strengthening institutional defence engagement.
- Both countries emphasised freedom and security of maritime routes and safe, unhindered shipping amid global conflicts.
- Cooperation is also being expanded against terrorism, transnational organised crime and cybercrime, including institutional cooperation between the CBI and Belgian Federal Police.
- Belgium is important to India’s engagement with the wider European security and defence ecosystem.
