Why in News?
INS Tamal, a multi-role stealth frigate, was commissioned at Kaliningrad, Russia. It is the last foreign-built major warship for the Indian Navy, underscoring Aatmanirbhar Bharat and marking a milestone in India-Russia defence cooperation.

- Class: Krivak class (Russia-origin).
- Series: Second ship of the Tushil Class.
- Tushil Class = upgraded versions of Talwar and Teg classes (each had 3 ships).

- Built at Yantar Shipyard, Kaliningrad.
- Last major warship to be imported — aligns with India’s shift to Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.
Name Significance:
- “Tamal” = mythical sword of Indra, King of Gods.

- Includes the BrahMos long-range supersonic cruise missile (sea and land targets).
