Context
Indian digital certification authority eMudhra has disclosed the compromise of private keys linked to a part of its global certificate business, triggering advisories from CERT-In, action by major browser makers, and a government investigation.

Explanation
- Role of eMudhra: As a prominent licensed Certifying Authority (CA) under India’s Information Technology (IT) Act, eMudhra is responsible for issuing digital signatures and SSL/TLS certificates that authenticate website identities and secure internet traffic.
- A cryptographic key is the actual tool used to lock or unlock data, operating as a string of random mathematical code that performs the encryption or decryption. A digital certificate is the official ID card for that key, issued by a trusted third party to prove exactly who the key belongs to so that malicious actors cannot impersonate them.
- The Core Issue: The problem started when a technical glitch and human error caused eMudhra to generate certificates with incredibly weak keys. These certificates are supposed to use highly complex, random numbers that are mathematically impossible to crack.
- The Security Threat: If a cybercriminal had utilized these weak keys, they could have committed digital forgery. They could build a fake copy of a bank or shopping site, sign it with eMudhra’s compromised key, and your computer would completely trust the fake site without showing any security warnings.
- No actual data breach or hacking occurred yet. However, Independent researchers discovered that eMudhra accidentally published eight “master security keys” that were dangerously weak.
- The Global Response: To protect the internet, tech giants like Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Mozilla immediately stripped their trust from these specific keys. By blacklisting them, they ensured no scammer could ever use them to trick a device.
