Context
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has begun developing Bharat Vann, a one-acre urban forest in Lodhi Colony, New Delhi, using the Miyawaki technique. More than 10,000 saplings are being planted as part of an urban afforestation initiative.
Explanation
- The Miyawaki method is a technique for developing small, dense micro-forests using mainly native trees, shrubs and plants.
- It was developed in the 1970s by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki and is particularly suited to degraded, abandoned and urban land.
- It involves planting diverse native species densely to create multi-layered vegetation resembling natural forests.
- Bharat Vann will use 76 native and climate-adapted species, including fruit-bearing trees, shrubs, flowering plants and large shade trees.
- Such micro-forests can support urban biodiversity, carbon sequestration, temperature regulation, air-quality improvement and green cover.
- The technique has also been used on railway land in Jhansi, where 1.15 lakh saplings were planted across 3.39 hectares.
